I would have loved to try and get a noise out of one but was put off by the amount of 'slobber' there probably is on the end! The noise they make is quite eerie. It must be amazing to hear one in the bush echoing around the hills.
I have to admit I haven't actually heard one played by anyone other than Rolf Harris. But from that alone I would think it is a very magical sound in it's proper environment.

One of my cousins is a remarkable didgeridoo player! I have grown to like the sound very much-- it is quite magical, I think.

They can make an incredible range of sounds. I agree with you - very haunting.
