25,000 sq km pumice raft floats in sea

It is believed to be from New Zealand's third erupting volcano – the undersea mount Monowai.
The navy said the raft – 463 kilometres by 55 kilometres – was spotted by an RNZAF Orion returning on patrol from Samoa.
Canterbury, which left Auckland on Wednesday, sailed to the raft to pick up a sample.

Ha ha - pumice - acres of it! Enough to 'do' the world's feet. Not that any has washed up on our shores yet. But that could happen.
We can pick it up here around the shores of Lake Taupo where is it a legacy of earlier eruptions long long ago. It is interesting to see layers in the strata when they scrape away a bank to put in new roads.
